When you need some silence
Budapest is a party town. Take a break from it.
Budapest is a serious party town, but sometimes a soul needs a little quiet. The Buda Hills make a perfect half-day hike, and City Park and Margaret Island are lovely for a gentle stroll.
While you're up in the Buda Hills, ride the Libegő, the chair lift that carries you up to János Hill, the highest point in Budapest. On a clear day, the view from the little tower at the top is mesmerizing. The ride itself takes about 12 to 15 minutes each way, and it's a joy.
If you're into hiking or green places, WhatsApp me and I'll share a few more tips. Here are two to start with.
Don't miss the Children's Railway, a little forest train staffed mostly by children and teenagers. Only the driver and a few others are adults. It's not far from downtown, about 45 minutes to an hour away.
There are also several caves just 30 minutes from downtown. You can visit them with a guide and no special equipment. My favorite is the Pálvölgyi stalactite cave (Pálvölgyi-cseppkőbarlang). On the way there, stop at the most amazing pastry shop, Daubner, on Szépvölgyi út near Kolosy tér.
