What Hungarians are proud of

Nod politely. Then have seconds.

That said, get ready. Hungarians will gladly tell you how big Hungary once was, and it's true. They'll tell you about our thousand-year history, and that's true too. Of course, most of us had little to do with it.

Hungarians are also proud of the Rubik's Cube, paprika and pálinka. Surprisingly, even sour cream and cottage cheese hold a special place in the Hungarian heart. And it's true: this kind of cottage cheese is hard to find outside this part of the world.

Speaking of food, you must try a Túró Rudi. It's a Hungarian snack that every generation adores as a child, and some of us never grow out of it, myself included. It's sweetened curd covered in chocolate: refreshing, not too sweet, and the very heart of the Hungarian soul.

At any market, stop by the pickle stalls, especially one run by the producer themselves. You'll see gigantic barrels of sauerkraut, pickled cucumbers and peppers, and even baby watermelons. They're harvested when they're only about 2 inches (5 cm) wide and completely green, and then pickled. In one sitting you can eat 5 or 6 whole watermelons.

Hungarian cuisine is rather greasy, but don't tell the Hungarians that. Just enjoy it. It's your vacation.
