Hungarian brains, mostly abroad

Many Nobel Prizes, few won at home.

We are very proud of our Nobel Prizes: probably among the highest counts per capita in the world. Almost none were won in Hungary, though. The experiments needed money the country didn't have, and these geniuses found a warmer welcome abroad.

Vitamin C, first isolated from Hungarian paprika, is one of the Nobel-winning discoveries.

The ballpoint pen was invented by a Hungarian.

So was the Rubik's Cube.

And at least partially, the hydrogen bomb and the computer were invented by Hungarians as well.
